Artist Review

The biography of Marie-Laure van Hissenhoven, a Belgian, who can also be called a full-fledged European by now (by militancy and culture), is already rich in spatial and intellectual references that cannot all be mentioned here: Brussels (Obtained her A levels) Genoa, London (Saint Martin’s school), Milan (Worked for “Esprit” clothing firm and pursued courses in textile design at the Marangoni Institute), Carrara (Academy of Fine Arts). There are also names of some artists for reference : the Genoese painter Rocco Borella (abstractionist, brother-in-law of Itten and Max Bill, well known for his “Historical stories” as well as for his relationhips with artists who like him at the time, were invited to the “Bardiana” Biennial in São Paulo, Brazil, to the Venice Biennial, to the International centre for constructive arts studies between Berlin and Paris), the pictorial-teachers Umberto Buscione, Omar Galliani and Prof. Valerio Rivosecchi (this is how we discussed the thesis on Belgian artist Panamarenko at the Accademia Apuana). She has been working intensively in the field of visual arts for a long time, but her voluptuousness as a “traveler”, disenchanted and enthusiastic at the same time, she is already conspicuous and culturally supported.
She does not share the same point of view with the supporters of the “tabula rasa” in art (and it is correct to behave that way) but she also realizes that contemporary reality is not the crowded, noisy and polluted metropolis, but it is composed of spaces that “only” contain (silos, for example) or that only fleetingly host means of transport (small stations) or that temporarily collect objects and products (warehouses). Marie-Laure paintings are about reality, where man is absent or virtual even though he is master of the artifacts and where disenchantment, isolation and remoteness reign supreme.
The absence of the figure does not, however, mean that the artist lacks interest in the “human dimension”: on the contrary, it is as if she wanted to safeguard against the rhythms and noises that go beyond them and are imposed on the most peaceful daily normality.
In this way, walls and spaces host colors and lights (the port of Antwerp, for example, but above all the warehouses of the naval supplies of the port of Genoa) as well as harmonious geometries. Particularly significant, for the original “en avant” perspective and for the central luminous fulcrum, the work “Port of Genoa, the border”, oil on canvas from 2001: it is an abstract composition – concrete in the most determined and “historical” sense of the term; the concreteness is in the columns that allow light to penetrate; abstraction is the core beyond which we can only imagine, assume.
Chromatically important and constructively accurate are the diptychs A/2 and B/2 “General warehouses for the Port of Genoa”, where everything is based on a view from below and a coordinated and concerted positioning of lines and colors. But it is not lacking in Marie-Laure the lyrical-romantic shot: The tree in front of “the station of Lunae” that through its bare branches, winter, embroiders the blues beyond the rails and a piece of heaven for spiritual rest.
I will also like to point out, both for their compositional concept and above all for the graphic choices – coloristic,”Silos/A, Silos/C, Silos/E and Silos/F”: brightness soothing pictorial, bearers of quietness and mental joy. Finally, I will venture to give an interpretation on the works “Station on the sea”: there are seven oils on the canvas or on the table, which indicate to pose our gaze and our inventive view in a country as marvelously hypothetical as “Gaia”. Thank you Marie-Laure and a good trip to the most reserved and unknown mental and emotional prairies, producing relaxing pleasures, as well as in the most shiny and silent ports.

Ferruccio Battolini – Giugno 2003

TOKYO?

Today there is much talk of RMN, the famous and inflated magnetic resonance. Who’s never entered that claustrophobic tunnel of X-rays, cast the first stone. However, this is not the assessment that will help you to understand Marie-Laure van Hissenhoven. For her, it will take aerial photography, one that allows us to see the layers, superimposed on a civilization. Thus we will notice that the most ancient foundations of the Marie-Laure person are Flemish, of French expression blended with the infinite sweetness of the flat country of painting: Belgium. Marie-Laure does not know she has this silent patriotism, but she is aware of her humor in Flanders and has always been accustomed to listening to jokes about her nation without blinking. Jacques Brel, already ill, had a sailboat built by an axe master whose family resembled very much those described by him in the beautiful and fierce song “Les Flamands”. The Flemish boat architect worked quickly and efficiently and never talked to him about his song and songs. With ax shots and silence, he became his last great friend. The other layer that emerges from aerial photography of the artist’s personality is Ligurian, warrior, equally, but otherwise humorous. Let us also remember in addition to that, those parts of the painting were done 35,000 years ago. At Balzi Rossi for example.

Mexico City is the opposite of Tokyo, as far as the eye can see small low houses, one attached to the other. They have no end, there is no horizon after these poor neighborhoods. Even the skyscrapers of the Japanese capital are also endless. Not poor though. Marie-Laure portrays them by graciously teasing them. Her city seems to be built from the imagination of guys who put it together with wooden blocks they painted. If Amélie Nothomb has made us laugh with her torrential descriptions of Japan in person, Marie-Laure makes us smile with her descriptions in Japan’s “hoist” of houses and things. We like to think that only two young and fascinating Belgians could describe the country of the Rising Sun so slightly and profoundly.
“La Belgique n’est pas morte, vive la Belgique!”
